Quebec court orders Tesla Canada to reimburse insurer for Model X fire

A Quebec court found Tesla had not supported its claim that a Montreal Model X fire was likely caused by misuse or vandalism. The ruling matters because it required Tesla Canada to cover the insurer’s payout after an expert tied the fire to an electrical failure.

A Quebec court ordered Tesla Canada to pay C$161,700, the amount an insurer had paid out after a 2020 Model X burned in Montreal.

Tesla had told the court that car fires are “generally” caused by misuse or vandalism, but the judge rejected that argument. According to the summary, Tesla offered no data to support its theory.

An expert report traced the fire to an electrical failure in the dashboard of the 2020 Model X. The vehicle was still under Tesla’s warranty, the summary said.
