Waymo will add a Toyota bZ4X-based vehicle to its robotaxi lineup, with a test fleet due to start operating in Japan in 2027. The move marks the first vehicle to emerge from the companies’ partnership and supports Waymo’s planned Tokyo launch.
Waymo is adding the Toyota bZ4X to its robotaxi lineup. Toyota will build a custom version of the electric SUV with the Waymo Driver integrated on the line in Japan, according to the source.
A test fleet is scheduled to begin operating in Japan in 2027. The source says this is the first actual vehicle to come out of the partnership the two companies signed last year.
The vehicle is intended to give Waymo a Japanese-built car for its planned Tokyo launch, with the UK and other markets to follow, the source said.
