Ultium Cells plans Tennessee plant retrofit for LMR cell production
Ultium Cells says it will convert its Spring Hill, Tennessee battery cell plant to make prismatic LMR cells. The chemistry is intended for future General Motors EVs from 2028 and is said to offer about 33% higher energy density than LFP at similar cost.
Ultium Cells plans to retrofit its battery cell plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, USA, for production of prismatic LMR cells. The company says the new chemistry is intended for future General Motors electric vehicles starting in 2028.
According to the report, the LMR cells are expected to provide approximately 33 per cent higher energy density than LFP while costing about the same. The source does not give a timeline for the retrofit itself.
The announcement concerns battery cell manufacturing for electric vehicles and does not provide further details on investment size or production capacity.
