Ports are buying battery-electric reach stackers, according to CleanTechnica
CleanTechnica says ports are choosing battery-electric reach stackers even though the machines are often seen as a hydrogen use case. The point matters because it suggests batteries are being used in heavier port equipment than some observers expected.
CleanTechnica published an article on 2026-10-01 arguing that reach stackers, which are often viewed as a strong fit for hydrogen, are nonetheless being bought as battery-electric machines by ports.
The article says large reach stackers can weigh more than 70 tonnes before lifting anything, and can then handle loaded shipping containers weighing another 40 tonnes or more, including in rows several containers high.
The piece presents this as evidence that batteries are moving into demanding port applications despite the machine’s heavy-duty profile.
